In the hood (ies)

The volleyball team I play for is much like the England football team - only less hairy. We've got some talented individual players but we just don't gel well as a team. On court, that is, as we do just fine in the pub.

Although we have the physical ability (maybe fitness could be improved!) we tend to let our heads get in the way and talk ourselves out of winning. I know, it's daft, and our poor coaches are losing their hair over it. Actually, one of them has no hair, so scrap that.

This weekend we have two matches against top of the league teams so we're not expected to win. I guarantee we'll play our socks off and perform much better than we do against the middle league teams. If we're expected to win, we buckle under the pressure, and if we're not expected to win, we fight a good fight.

Fingers crossed we do some damage this weekend before our coaches throw down their clipboards and head for the hills. I think turning up in our new team hoodies will help you know, 'cos we'll look the part. We haven't resorted to wearing knee-high white socks yet, like some volleyballers do. Extreme oddness me thinks - how do long socks make you play better? They just make you look stoopid. Socks of this making are meant for long haul plane flights, not volleyball courts.

Anyway, I digress. Yes, we'll all look fab in our new hoodies 'cos they are nice and fluffy and snuggly and warm. We may be sportswomen but we can still make an effort with our appearance. And, contrary to popular opinion, playing for a women's sports team does not make you a lesbian.

PS Apologies for this random blog entry. Am running short of material today.
